Friends Making a Difference
Dave Doran Statement of Gratitude

Dave Doran Statement of Gratitude

April 25, 2023

"When I met Tom Goodwin and Bill Kocis in 2019 and they described the Friends Making A Difference organization, I was drawn to them and the mission of the group they assembled. Members included Frank Lugossy, Dawn Sizemore, Lynn Bowen, Bill Perilli, Deacon Jim Challender and the Rob’s - Marrazzo and Calabro.

New board members Mike and Stephanie Pratico, Joseph and Brooke Pratico and the Kelly’s Akin and their hard workers John, Alexa and Sara breathed life into the organization post-Covid and continue their dedication to helping others. And a special thanks to Gennaro’s for expanding their capabilities and hosting us this evening.

I’ve been fortunate to have so many good people in my life and I count the former and current FMAD board members in this category. If it were not for the actions of this group, life would be significantly different for people that find themselves in challenging life circumstances. They are people whose actions are rooted in faith and they sacrifice many hours to serve others. They are my kind of people and I reserve the right to shine a light on the future good deeds they perform.

Becoming non-verbal creates an opportunity for those close to you to surrogate. Several of you have spoken for me over the past 4 years and I extend my deepest appreciation for your time and efforts. And for those who have been trying to shut me up for years - you win! When it became apparent I could no longer manage my feeding tube, Rich Pieslak selflessly dedicated time and organized the “A Team” to help. Our home visit feeding adventures are worthy of a Comedy Central special.

My most precious gifts - Molly, Erin and Conor - are constantly with me, whether in person or spiritually. I didn’t think my love for them could grow any greater until ALS started to gain ground. They’ve shown a level of patience and care that makes me proud to be their father. They understand “The Plan” and subscribe to faith in God.

And how can a man be luckier to have amazing siblings who have stepped up to the plate. Dan, Sue and Brian have lent support and helped be my voice when needed.

A little bit about the ALS journey.

Symptoms came to a head late summer 2018 on the golf course with my friend Dan Greco. Tests led to a misdiagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis and ultimately in early 2019 I was properly diagnosed with ALS. As my pal Eric Toppy and I left the Gehrig Clinic I recall feeling both relieved and concerned - relieved that I finally had a definitive diagnosis and concerned for my children. For the record, I was one shot up on Dan when we had to cut the day short.

Fast forward, we are OK - and blessed to be part of a “community” that includes St Greg’s, The Robbinsville Soccer Association, ONE Project, Ravens Hockey, Doane Academy, Lifetree Community Church, FMAD, the bubble fostered by Dave Fried, and my brothers and sisters at the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for your understanding and support.

In 2019 mentioned to Tom and Bill that I would like to be involved in future FMAD activities. I reiterate my desire to help the current board and look forward to helping others in the future.

Lastly, I love you all, thank you for being here and God bless."

Sláinte,

Dave Doran
