National Gun Violence Awareness Day Proclamation

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - (June 3, 2022) - Robbinsville Township Council President Mike Cipriano, also a veteran Cranbury Police Officer, along with Council Vice President Debbie Blakely, a mother of two, presented a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Dave Fried to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America Friday in support of National Gun Violence Awareness Day (June 3).

“NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY”

WHEREAS, every day more than 110 Americans are killed by gun violence and over 40,000 die annually as a result of being shot by guns; and

WHEREAS, Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with guns than people in comparable high-income countries; and

WHEREAS, there were 288 school shootings in the United States between 2009 and 2018 – 280 more than the next leading country; and

WHEREAS, protecting public safety in the communities they serve is the highest responsibility of our mayors; and

WHEREAS, support for the Second Amendment Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from individuals with dangerous criminal histories and the mentally ill; and

WHEREAS, in January of 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade and was tragically shot and killed just weeks later, should be now celebrating her 25th birthday; and

WHEREAS, to honor Hadiya – and all of those impacted by shootings every day, including the most recent mass tragedies in Buffalo, N.Y. and Uvalde, Texas – a national coalition has designated June 3, 2022 as the 8th “National Gun Violence Awareness Day” and encourage all Americans to wear orange to honor the many victims of gun violence and their survivors; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor David L. Fried of the Township of Robbinsville, with the support of Township Council, declare June 3, 2022, “National Gun Violence Awareness Day.” I encourage all citizens to support legal and responsible gun ownership in keeping with our Constitution, while supporting all efforts to prevent gun violence and respect all human life.
