School District, Township Host Tabletop Security Exercise

Robbinsville Public Schools, Township Host Tabletop Security Exercise

Safety Protocols Reinforced at All Three District Schools

Robbinsville (NJ) Public School District Administration, Robbinsville Police Chief Mike Polaski and the entire RTPD Command Staff, along with Councilwoman Debbie Blakely, Fire Chief Dan Schaffener, RTFD Captain Jason Palmer, and 22 total participants, met on May 31 to conduct a security tabletop exercise.

The goal of the exercise, which included all three School Resource Officers (SRO), was to review current safety protocols at all three Robbinsville Public School buildings for precision and accuracy. This security tabletop exercise was conducted in full support of Township Mayor and Public Safety Director Dave Fried and his team.

The four-hour session was in the planning stages for three months and was designed to thoroughly evaluate all district policies and procedures while making any necessary updates in relation to securing the safety of all staff and students. Scenarios of various school safety drills were acted out to ensure administration and law enforcement understand individual roles so leaders can act in unison should a threat come to the district.

“In the wake of last week’s unspeakable tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, the timing of this tabletop exercise was appropriate,” School District Superintendent Brian Betze said. “By working with the Township and our local law enforcement and fire authorities, we hope to reinforce and even improve our protocols to help keep our schools as safe as possible. I would like to thank everyone in attendance, including Det. Sgt. Scott Kivet who initiated this tabletop exercise. Without the support of our Mayor and local fire and law enforcement officials, our responsibility to protect everyone in our buildings would be much more difficult.”

Going forward, school district administration and law enforcement will strive to hold tabletop exercise drills twice a year in order to evaluate security procedures and ensure the continuation of staff training throughout the year.

“The Robbinsville Police Department, with the full support of Mayor Fried, Administrator Joy Tozzi and Township Council, remain committed to working with the School District to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff,” Chief Polaski said. “We train for all types of incidents, and we are fully prepared to respond to all types of emergencies.”
