Phase 1 Restoration of Washington Woods

Phase 1 Restoration Work at Washington Woods

UPDATED: ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - (October 25, 2018) - Exactly two weeks after Township Council awarded Caruso Excavation Inc. of Ocean Township the bid to begin Phase 1 of the Washington Woods restoration project, site work has begun.

The Washington Woods property, also known as Edinburg Village, was cleared and graded with several stormwater basins excavated prior to acquisition by Robbinsville Township. Work on Phase 1 is expected to be completed this fall.

The Phase 1 contract includes filling in the excavated stormwater basins, redistribute stockpiled topsoil, install soil seeding and stabilization, and in the installation of soil erosion measures such as a silt fence and a stone rip rap. The work will help to minimize soil erosion and will replant much of the site with new lawns.

Future contracts will stabilize and plant the remainder of the site so that soil erosion is eliminated as much as practical and lawn/landscape is installed. Mercer County pledged $2,000,000 in 2016 to help the Township purchase and rehabilitate the site. As a result, no taxpayer dollars are being used to fund Phase 1 of the project.

In January of 2017, Mercer County Judge Paul Innes ruled the 225-acre plot on Robbinsville-Edinburg Road was a public use and granted the Township legal title.

Voters overwhelmingly passed an increase in the town's open space tax in 2016 to help buy land to preserve. Washington Woods had been targeted by a local developer for 50 homes.
