Dear Taxpayer:
On May 5, Council President Rich Levesque and I sent a letter encouraging the president of the Robbinsville teachers’ union, the local arm of the NJEA, to present his members with a one-year wage freeze and contributions to health care on par with those being made by all Robbinsville Township employees, including members of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA).
On May 11, we received the attached response. At the Council meeting that evening, Mr. Levesque and fellow Council members had to weigh how much funding to give our school system. Because the union leadership refused to consider wage or benefit concessions, the meeting turned into a debate whether the Council was “for” our schools or “for” the taxpayers who had rejected both the school budget and the March 9 referendum.
This false choice is exactly the dynamic that the NJEA seeks when it refuses to be part of the solution to the worse recession of our times. Council President Levesque and I have sent a response to Mr. Birch Wilson. Please read it and share it with your neighbors.
Mayor Dave Fried
