New Transportation Service for Seniors and those who are visually impaired:

Seniors are in trouble, ITN can help. A new transportation service is starting in Mercer County to provide much needed rides to seniors and the visually impaired.

Too many people in Mercer County are prevented from leading the full, active lives that they could be leading because of transportation limitations.  Some seniors and the visually impaired are forced to stay home or drive when they should not because they have no other options.  The Independent Transportation Network (ITN) was created to alleviate this problem.  ITNGreaterMercer™, a program of the Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association, is dedicated to providing dignified transportation to seniors and the visually impaired in Mercer County.  ITN will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week starting October 4.

ITN is not a charity but a community-based nonprofit where interested parties join and become a dues-paying members of an organization committed to protecting their independence and mobility.  Ride fees are based on mileage and taken directly out of a member’s account; members never have to pay their driver.  Members can go wherever they want within the ten mile service area around Quakerbridge Mall; trip frequency, purpose and destination are never limited.  If members need to travel outside the Mercer County service area, ITN provides rides to the local train stations.  ITN members can receive discounts on rides by traveling to participating businesses and medical facilities or by sharing rides with friends.

Community members can help out by becoming volunteer drivers, donating to the community scholarship fund or giving an ITN gift certificate to a loved one who is a member.  Too often we never think about not being able to drive until it is too late.  Having reliable transportation for seniors and the visually impaired is an issue that concerns the whole community.  ITNGreaterMercer™ is currently looking for volunteer drivers as well as members as its organization continues to grow.  For more information or to request an application, call 609-452-1491 or visit www.itngreatermercer.org.
